Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan yesterday (Sep 12) hit out at Singaporeans who criticised his poor performance saying that he is not “lazing around and giving excuses” and even claimed that he is “working in trenches within tunnels”. The Minister was referring to the railway workers and subtly included himself to defend himself against critics:
“I want to satisfy myself that people are not lazing around giving excuses, but putting their hearts and souls into their project, and they do.”
The Transport Minister also claimed that he spends “much time” with railway workers in the “trenches within the tunnels”:
“I spend much time with workers in the trenches within the tunnels, and also buy them durians and curry puffs each time there’s something to celebrate. Such small gestures made a difference not only to the crew, but also to me.”
It is unknown what work can the Transport Minister do inside the trenches within the tunnels.
Earlier in July, Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that he doesn’t like “negative media reports” and slammed his own government-owned state media as “tabloids”. Challenging reporters to “run the train system”, Minister Khaw Boon Wan said:
“So let me now spend some time discussing the ongoing resignalling project on the North-South Line. I thought I should do it because I don’t like the media reporting because I think they have magnified the problem unfairly, even our mainstream media had turned tabloid. It is exciting and so on…glamourous you know…frightening figures…headlines. But I think it is unfair to the teams, some of them who are here, working their guts off resignalling project. They think it is so easy like taking a pen and write a few articles. Signalling done you know. I wish it was so simple. If it were so simple you don’t need us. You can ask the reporters to run the train system.”
