Minister of State and government union NTUC chief Chan Chun Sing today (Apr 19) poured praises for himself claiming that NTUC can continue to “get things done” even when he is not around:
“Whichever portfolio labour chief I am given when the Cabinet is reshuffled, I am confident that the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) will continue its work and get things done… We are always conscious that if you are around and things get done, that’s one level of competency. But if you are no longer around and things still get done because there’s a collective vision and ownership, that is a higher order of competency that I think we all should aspire towards.”
When questioned by state media reporters which ministry he would be heading to, Minister Chan Chun Sing reiterated his staunch loyalty to the Prime Minister saying that he will do whatever Lee Hsien Loong wants:
“Where I go, what do I do, that’s the Prime Minister’s prerogative so if there is any change, wait for the Prime Minister and his announcement. We should remind ourselves to be more focused on where the country is going rather than where the individual might be going.”
State media CNA speculated that Minister Chan Chun Sing will take over the trade ministry portfolio, after Trade Minister Lim Hng Kiang who was told to leave the Cabinet. Two other elderly Ministers were also asked to resign, Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say and propaganda Information and Communication Minister Yacob Ibrahim.
Minister Chan Chun Sing was a former army general who has no relevant experience in economics or trade. It is unknown how would the military man would be able to head the Trade Ministry, without knowing a thing about trade tariffs and import-export regulations.
